The John Wagner Coalition - Shades Of Brown
Side B Track 1: Mother Popcorn MP3
Side B Track 3: Coldblooded MP3
Limited edition of 1000 copies
Our latest album reissue includes wicked cover versions of all James Brown's funkiest numbers. Played by a killer 20-piece band featuring musicians from cult mid-1970s funk bands Mainstreet and David, these are no ordinary cover versions. Massive drums, fat bass and killer percussion drive a powerful horn section and fantastic vocal performances. It's packed with breaks and beats and works hard on any dancefloor too - people say it's the best funk album that James Brown never made! Originally issued in 1976, this is a rare and very sought-after album with original copies now fetching over 100 bucks. Playlisted by DJs such as Coldcut, this album is in massive demand as it's totally in the pocket from start to finish. Just check this track listing: Cold Sweat, Fatwood, Coldblooded, My Thang, Mother Popcorn, Sex Machine, Out Of Sight, Superbad Superslick, Ain't It Funky and It's A Man's World - every track's a killer! | About this release |
Prized by DJs, producers and collectors for its uncompromisingly funky approach to James Brown's best numbers, "Shades Of Brown" was a studio project put together by producer John Wagner. "I was producing a lot of funk and R&B projects at that time. I had been working with [James' label] Starday-King and producing my own acts and 'Wayne Cochran & the CC Riders' for King." In his association with King, John had been exposed to James Brown's music at an early stage. "I had worked with Dave Harrison, who was engineering the sessions for James, and I often worked in the Cincinnatti studio where James recorded." The concept of a JB covers album had been in his mind for a while. "I thought there should be a way to play his songs with more cross-over appeal. I talked it over with a few people who agreed it was a good idea, so I decided to spring the concept on a local label, and they liked it." John used musicians from two of his other acts, 'Mainstreet' and 'David', to work on the session. "I asked them to help me out and we started recording. Because most of them had played James' songs before, as we cut the songs we had selected I just worked with them and molded it on the spot. It went together smoothly. They were terrific players."
