Little information appears to exist concerning Collection, apart from the single artefact of what must be their only LP, recorded by Keith Herd at Fairview in Willerby. The moribund sleeve notes to the self-titled album give only a few clues; started in 1966 by guitarist Cliff Dutton, during their early years Collection once boasted such names as eminent jazz-fusion guitarist Alan Holdsworth and Pete Spencer, subsequently the drummer with Smokie in their chart years and composer of the 1982 England world cup song. However, it seems as though despite ploughing the furrow of the club circuit for over a decade, Collection never got to emulate the successes of their former members. The album features a wide range of cover versions from Abba to the Beatles, with a track listing that suggests a date of 1977. Only first names are attributed to those involved on the LP sleeve, but as far as can be ascertained, Cliff was joined on the album by, amongst others, Brenda Martin on vocals and Pete Bell on drums. Despite the promise of the sleeve notes that one day it will happen, sadly, it never did for Collection. It is rumoured that Cliff Dutton now resides in Germany. Perhaps this compilation will lead to the truth being known about these troupers. |
